Sour cream and green onion dip are here to stay and we’re not complaining. The junk food aisle of the grocery store inspired this beloved dip of ours and we now have it with all kinds of chips, pita chips, and bread chips. It’s a healthier version, as we love it.
Have any of you tried Frito Lays’ French onion dip?
It’s usually in the junk food aisle of the grocery store, what we call “heaven”. This is probably one of the best-tasting commercial dips we have ever eaten.
We love it so much that we dip any flavored chips into this delicious dip.
We stopped ourselves one day and realized, hey, we can make this. And then this recipe came to life.
Frito Lays’ French onion dip is creamy, sour, has a hint of onion, and it even has some onion bits. It’s perfect for lightly salted dishes, chips, pita chips, and even bread.
We’ve come up with our own recipe to lighten the expenses a little (because we really do love that dip) and to create a homemade and healthier version of this loved dip.

It’s perfect for game and movie nights
We often associate a bag of chips with movie nights, movie theaters, game nights at home or at the stadium.
There’s something about munching on something salty and crispy while watching events unfold before our eyes. It makes things more interesting and fun.
We honestly think that chips were made for these events and in order to spice things up and make these chips more interesting, dips were made.
Dipping your delicious favorite flavored chips into a small bowl of dip will only make you eat more and enjoy the movie or game more.

What if I don’t have sour cream at home?
If you don’t have ready-made sour cream at home, it’s completely fine.
You can make your own sour cream by adding a teaspoon of lemon juice into a cup of heavy cream. Sour cream usually takes time to make, ideally. However, if you’re in a rush, you can make your own with these two simple ingredients.
If you have crème fraiche, you can also use that.
Ingredients
- Sour Cream
Sour cream is obviously the main man of this show together with green onions. You can use any brand of sour cream available at the grocery store.
- Cream Cheese
Have you ever wondered what makes this dip extra delicious? It’s the cream cheese! Remember to soften the cream cheese.
- Green Onions
Thinly slice the green onions and we like including a little bit of the bulb in the bottom.
- Parsley
Parsley adds a subtle herby flavor to this dip.
- Garlic
Of course, there’s garlic in anything delicious! Garlic adds sharpness to this dip.
- Vinegar
We like adding a little bit more souring agent to this dip to balance the richness.
- Salt and Pepper
It’s always good to have salt and pepper lying around just in case you need to adjust flavors.
Tips and Tricks
- Add a little bit of the bulb
The sharpest tasting part of the green onion is in the bulb. We like chopping up a small part of that bulb to add to the dip just to get that extra onion kick.
- Serve chilled
It’s always more appetizing to serve this kind of dip chilled rather than at room temperature.
- Make sure the cream cheese is soft
There’s nothing more hassling than working with hard cream cheese most especially if you have to whip it up. Leave your cream cheese out at least an hour before preparing this dip.

How to make sour cream and onion dip
It’s very easy to make this dip. All you need is a food processor. There’s no need to cook anything.
First, make sure that all of your ingredients are ready before making this.
In a food processor, combine the sour cream and softened cream cheese and whip it up until smooth and creamy.
Remove from the food processor and place in a bowl. Stir in the rest of the ingredients and chill.
